300 Cretins (Using 300 Spartans and the success of the 300 movie to talk about politics)

"It takes a great deal of courage to stand with only 300 men against 100,000. However, unlike the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae, the small group of men who goaded President Bush into Iraq did so at no great personal sacrifice. As Bill Bonner explains, it is the common man who will suffer the greatest sacrifice of this War on Terror."

Bizarre use of the 300 movie to discuss politics!

Iran Declares War on Sparta in Light of 300 Movie

"In what foreign policy experts believe to be a direct response to the hit American movie “300,” Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today declared war on Sparta. Even for the mercurial Ahmadinejad, the move struck many diplomatic insiders as extraordinary, since the consensus in the international community is that the city-state of Sparta no longer exists."

Frank MIller's and Zack Snyder's and Gerard Butler's 300 the movie is up to $127 million!

"Spartans continued to fend off the box-office competition as the battle epic "300" took the No. 1 spot for the second-straight weekend with $31.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Warner Bros. movie, the story of vastly outnumbered Spartans defending against Persian invaders, shot past the $100 million mark after just a week in theaters, bringing its total to $127.5 million."

Iranian TV Reviews of 300: Some Comments

"If I were looking to whip up the Persian masses, I think I might've mentioned that the only Persian women shown in the flick are lesbians, that the Persians are shown engaging in decadent, gender-bending orgies and that King Xerxes is portrayed as vain, incompetent, very wierd and ambiguously gay--and I include the word "ambiguously" only because he's not explicitly shown banging any dudes. Think Ra from Stargate--only taller and more gay."

Iran Still Angry About Frank Miller's 300 Movie Directed by Zack Snyder

"Iran's representative to the Paris-based UNESCO, Mohammad-Reza Dehshiri, in a letter to UNESCO director general criticized screening of Warner Brothers anti-Iran movie `300' and called for its severe reaction and condemnation of such an insult."

...and...

"In his letter, Dehshiri protested over the inciting nature of the movie, deliberately insulting the Iranian nation, as the founder of dialogue among cultures and civilizations."

** WARNING: Adult Language ** Another 300 Movie Review: 5 of 5 Stars (of course)

"If you prepare yourself ahead of time for an action adventure flick full of ass kicking then prepare to have a good time. For the fellow comic nerds out there fearful of yet another comic book movie that will shit all over your childhood, fear no more. They got it right this time."

Movie Review: 300

1 reason why 300 the Movie is senseless?

"But it would have been nice to know they were actually fighting for a cause that gave them a definitive reason for a physical battle, and one where they (Greeks) were clearly outnumbered. I only wish I had 300 reasons why I liked this film; but instead I have one reason why I didn't."

This guy doesn't understand why the 300 Spartans were fighting? Madness!

Complaints About How Persians Are Depicted in Zack Snyder's 300 Movie

"The fact is that the world's intellectuals whether be the Persians, or non Persians, those whose hearts are filled with the love of Persia, Persian poetry and civilization, those who appreciate the great contributions of Persians towards the world's culture and science, would understand that the movie 300 is nothing but a distortion fact machine."

Is 300 Unethical? (You can read and decide for yourself.)

With the Raging Success of 300 Frank Miller Wants to Direct

"As a writer, the best way to make sure the story you want to tell gets told the way you want to tell it is to direct the film yourself. Obviously, Miller knows this and believes it and wants to make sure he gets to do it his way. Now that 300 is a monster hit, I'll bet he has a very easy time convincing studios to let him direct his own projects from now on. After all, money talks and those $70 million dollars have to be talking pretty loudly right now."

Financial Trivia About Zack Snyder's 300 (Hedge Fund Involvment)

"Among those pleased by the lucrative recounting of the Spartans’ slaughter? Hedge funds. Two of the five production companies listed for the swords-and-sandals epic are Virtual Studios and Legendary Pictures, both vehicles backed by those private investor pools."

Gerard Butler Interview, Frank Miller's 300

"I feel that with Leonidas there was an element of mysticism, that it wasn’t even about these men dying for him. It was almost like he knew 2500 years later they were going to make a film about it and it’s going to be not just that but it’s going to be a great film. There were many other things going on in his mind but at the end of the day I think the focus has to be that they believed they could win, you know. But if they died, that didn’t matter."

Another great Gerard Butler interview...

Zach Snyder Interview, Director Frank Miller's 300

"...the one thing I always try and stress is we are not Spartans in the movie. I try and show you from the first thing – it’s fun to be with Spartans, and it’s fun to go along with them, but you’re not them. And you see the first image is the Spartans throwing their kids off a cliff. I’d hope you’d go, ‘Wow, these guys are a little rough.’ They just beat their kids constantly."

"I’m training every second I get, whether with the stunt guys or especially with Mark [owner of Gym Jones, the team that trained with the cast]. I was doing that for two and a half months before the movie started, six days a week. At one point I was over doing it. I had two trainers – I was training in two different gyms and I was training with stunt guys everyday, so some days I was doing six hours a day."

300 Movie Slaughters Records!

Gladiator + Troy + Sin City = 300

"This movie was mind blowing. Automatically you can tell Frank Miller had his hand in this. Just like in Sin City the film 300 plays out with sort of a comic book vibe. It mixes a remarkable sound mix.....so great and defiant that sounds of shields and spears themselves rattled the theater. The film is very gory but in an animated way which shows slow motion Matrix style scenes with every fine detail of battle portrayed in a brilliant way."

Another Frank Miller 300 Movie Review!

"Snyder perfectly captures the look and feel of Miller's original work with a movie that is fun, exciting and sick without ever losing sight of the story or characters. If you're into movies like "Braveheart" and "Gladiator," this one stands amongst them in a way that belies its "comic book" roots."

300 Movie Brings History to Bloody Life (Wired.com)

All right! We're getting some exposure on Wired.com. This article includes an interview with Zack Snyder, the awesome Director behind 300. Let's take a look...

"No one should ever take drugs, ever. I want to go on the record on that. But if someone was to slip you a mickey, I would immediately get into a taxi and go to an Imax screening of 300."

"If you ask a digital artist to do a (computer-generated) shot, maybe a glass dropping on the ground, you can show it to anyone and ask, "Does that look real?" They'll say "yes" or "no." With 300, I was asking my artists to create something that looks surreal or fantastic, to create environments that were impossible. I was asking them to be artists again, to be expressive, to express their own emotions through the skies and landscapes."

"This is a historical film, and technology gave us the tools to render history in ways we haven't seen before. And it wasn't cost-prohibitive. The idea of making ancient Rome or the pyramids -- those could only have been done in very big-budget films. Now, rendering these kinds of images has become less expensive and more accessible. I think you'll be seeing more fantastic images and journeys back in time."

Frank Miller's 300 Movie: Rodrigo Santoro Interview

"Santoro was previously honored in his native Brazil for his work in "Bicho de Sete Cabecas (aka "Brainstorm"). Santoro's portrayal of a young man forced into a mental institution by his parents brought him a number of Best Actor Awards, including the first-ever Best Actor Award from the Brazilian Academy of Arts and Film, and the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize, also for Best Actor. He later earned another Cinema Brazil Grand Prize nomination for his work in 2003's "Carandiru," which broke all Brazilian box office records at the time of its release and was Brazil's entry for the Foreign Film category at the Academy Awards."

Here is what he had to say about his role in 300.

The First Bad Review of Frank Miller's 300?

"There's no doubt Frank Miller's graphic novel is a fun read, but Zack Snyder's interpretation was a boring, fast-food version of better films, with better scripts, better acting and better battles. 300 men fought to defend their freedom but, in the end, 300 people (including me) wanted their two hours back."

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but we all know this guy is full of crap! 300 is going to be the biggest movie of 2007. It is THE movie to see this year.

Advance Review of Frank Miller 300 the Movie

"Ultimately, this film combines an archetypal conflict, an ancient storytelling tradition reaching back as far as the Greeks themselves, and technique that makes it relevant to modern audiences. In other words, it's not clear whether great movie myths are born or bred, but 300 is unequivocally one of them."

5/5 Stars!

No surprise there...300 is THE movie of 2007. It cannot be too hyped!

Exclusive! 300 Movie Sequel?

"It would seem that the studio has put quite a bit of faith in Snyder's work on "300", because not only has he been entrusted with making "Watchmen", but producer Mark Canton expressed an interest in a sequel to "300", according to MoviesOnline."

So, will there be a 300 Movie sequel?

Given that 300 will be the top movie of 2007, you can bet that there is a chance of this. Remember that Frank Miller is a wizard. He has plenty of stories ready to go, I'm sure!

300 Trailer and the Super Bowl

300 the Movie Article on the New York Times

"THE story of “300” — the popular comic book mini-series and, soon, a film from Warner Brothers — began when Frank Miller, the series’s creator, was 6. The year was 1963, and “The 300 Spartans” was in theaters. In this telling of the battle of Thermopylae, Richard Egan played the Greek king Leonidas, who in 480 B.C. led 300 warriors in a doomed battle against the much larger Persian army, and David Farrar, regal in robes of purple and green, was the Persian king Xerxes. The film’s dialogue and staging may seem a bit quaint now. But the young Mr. Miller was stunned as he watched its climax, in which the few remaining Spartans are slaughtered in a hail of arrows."

The Persian-Greco War and Frank Miller's 300 Movie

Most comics readers, being literate and generally interested in adventurous stuff, probably have some background in Greek history, and might even know something about the Persian invasion of Greece. Still, not much is known on a general level about the specific battle depicted in 300, so we thought it might be a good idea to provide a simplified timeline of sorts for readers who are interested in learning more about the history behind what Miller calls "the best damn story I've ever gotten my hands on."

Tons of Photos from "300" Movie Presentation

Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, "300" concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy.

David Wenham from "300"

From About.com:

Wenham says he knew the story prior to signing on to the film. “I knew it. I studied Ancient Greece in school. I studied ancient history so the story itself I was very familiar with. Not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I was unfamiliar with Frank [Miller’s] take on it, which is just a wild take on it. It’s just brilliant. It makes it so much more accessible and contemporary and sexy and violent and obviously much more cinematic than one could ever imagine.”

Exclusive: Zack Snyder on 300 & Watchmen

The thing that's cool about "300" to me is that though it's a Frank Miller work, as an event in history, it's one of the seminal events. Everyone knows about it. I mean, any historian will tell you about Thermopylae, a famous crossroads in history. And so for that matter, it is a worthwhile story to tell, and I think that Frank, like myself, is inspired by that same story. I think and my hope is that in some ways it has accessibility in a broader world than "Sin City." Though I'm a huge fan of "Sin City," I feel like my father can go see "300" and go like, "That's awesome!" and see a fight for democracy, and I can go see it and go "Oh yeah, there's girls kissing!"
